Abstract:The veto effect has been shown to inhibit T cells efficiently and specifically. However, since CD8+ T cells are used as the tolerizing veto cells, this strategy cannot provide complete tolerance to a transplanted organ nor remove pathogenic T cells of an autoimmune disease. Here Uwe Staerz and colleagues review hybrid antibody-mediated inhibition of T cells that exploits the effectiveness and specificity of veto, yet broadens its reach to tissue-specific T cells.
